'The Orphan'

The start of this trailer for 'The Orphan' starts off within a normal world, where a couple visit an orphanage wanting to adopt a child. They discover a girl, Esther who is extremely sweet. They take her home where she seems very happy to meet her new brother and sister. However, when she starts at her new school, this is where it all seems to unfold. A girl in her class teases her and makes a little joke. However, the scene cuts to Esther in the toilets kicking and screaming violently. This scene leads us to see another side of Esther who is not so sweet after all.

Throughout the trailer, we see iconography of a horror movie, with the main character Esther who is what seems like a sweet, innocent child. Hand held movements are shot when the girl is screaming creating dramatic effect and also involving the audience in her emotions.

A close-up on swings shows the movement of the metal swinging backwards and forwards, whilst also we hear the creepy creek which is another convention of the horror genre. Different shots are then shown which are fast pace edited to which the audience's heartbeat raises and a sense of tension, mystery and shock takes over the screen. We discover Esther going crazy, killing her new brother and sister violently.

I like how in this film trailer the narrative structure starts of normal but then changes dramatically, which increases the level of curiosity and excitement. I definitely want to go and watch this film as there seems like a great story behind it with also lots of different camera shots and effects which adds to the excitement of the horror.
