Audience Research- Graphs.

This chart states who took part in our questionnaire in terms of male and female. What is interesting is that we actually asked more females within the audience research and yet normally we tend to think that men are the ones who enjoy horror movies the most. However, I think this helped to make sure that we didn't aim the teaser trailer directly at males and that we included females opinions too. I feel this demonstrates that our trailer will be open to a wider range of audience and will help in lifting figures of people who want to then go and watch the film.

This chart shows the age of our target audience of which a very high percentage were 16-18. Almost 75% are aged 16-18 and I feel that this shows who we should aim our trailer at specifically.

This chart shows the genre of which our target audience like best. The most popular is stated as 'psychological' with the number of 13 people compared to 6 who said 'slasher' was their favourite. However, closely related is the genre of 'gore' with 12 people saying they liked this best. I feel this helps our group to decide that our trailer should be a psychological story with gore also making a slight appearance in the teaser trailer.

This chart presents how often our target audience watch horror films. We found the majority watches horror films 'once a month'. Therefore, we know that there is a gap in the market for our horror teaser trailer to appear and will hopefully be the one film that they will want to watch in that month.

This graph shows that our target audience are scared mostly by the setting of an 'old abandoned house' with the percentage of 47.5% - 19 people. Also, another popular scary setting is the 'woods' with 13 people saying this. (32.5%)
I feel this helps us in our planning of our horror trailer in finding the perfect setting that will scare our audience. For example, if we were to base our trailer in a school then I feel this would not have the same effect on our viewers therefore not giving them what they want.

All of these questions were showing quantitative data where we can see clearly the percentage and figures where our target audience answered the questions by ticking one box on each question.

On the other hand, we had questions that showed qualitative data. These were questions that were open for each person to answer individually and to go into more depth.
For example:

  • What horror film do you like best?
  • What type of advertising most affects you?
  • What do you expect from a trailer?
  • What you expect from a horror?

These questions gave us the understanding that the 'Saw' films were most popular. I feel this is due to the psychological effect it has on it's audience which is what we plan to do with ours.

We found that the type of advertising which is most influential upon our target audience is trailers and this helped us in the understanding that our trailer would be highly successful in conjunction with magazines or billboards for example.

Our audience stated that within a trailer they expect to see the title, date of release, inter-titles which roughly gives us the guideline of the story and also a quick taster of the events within the film. They expect to be teased and left to want to go and see the film to find out more. When planning our trailer, this tells us of the exact things we need to put in our trailer and what we need to concentrate on most, for example making sure the trailer entices our audience.

Expected in horror- our audience said that they expect scary and creepy music, loud bangs that make you jump, flashes of faces or just generally flashes of scenes which are fast-paced therefore getting the audience member's heart racing.
